It’s fall people!!! What does that mean? Apple-flavored everything! If you love fruit-filled pastries as much as I do, this hearty apple tart recipe is a must try! It has all the tasty flavors of an apple tart, with a bit of a healthier take. I actually discovered it when planning for a “Local Fall Harvest” themed food demo and it was a huge hit! Feel free to modify as you wish; I’ve found a combination of ingredients that I really love. I’ve tried making this a few times, adapting from a recipe I found online (which seems to have disappeared from the web, otherwise I would link it here). Each time, I changed one or two things until I found a recipe that really worked for me. If apple desserts are your thing, you should give it a try and make it your own!
Ingredients:
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
- 2 tbsp ground flaxseeds
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup salted butter (1 stick), cold, cut into ~1 inch squares
- ~1/4 cup cold water
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground ginger
- 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/8 tsp ground cloves
- 3 apples (I used a hybrid “Evercrisp” that we picked last weekend, but any apple you like will work!)
- 1/4 cup real maple syrup
- 2 tbsp rolled oats
- 2 tbsp of roughly chopped pecans
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 375°.
- Combine all-purpose flour, wheat flour, ground flaxseeds, and salt. Whisk so they are evenly mixed.
- Add chilled butter to the flour mixture and use a pastry blender or a fork to cut butter pieces in until they are about the
size of peas. - Sprinkle about 2 tbsp of cold water onto the flour mixture and mix. Repeat until the mixture forms a cohesive dough, and shape it into a ball.
- Using a floured surface and a rolling pin, roll out the dough into about a 12 inch circle.
- Grease a baking sheet with butter and place the dough on the sheet.
- Set baking sheet with dough aside.
- Slice apples into thin pieces and place in a bowl. (I leave the skin on to add fiber and prevent food waste.)
- Combine maple syrup and spices into a small bowl and pour over the bowl of apples.
- Toss until all apples are evenly coated.
- Mound the apples in the center of the dough, leaving about 2 inches of dough around the edges.
- Fold up the edge of the dough over some of the apples, leaving most of them exposed in the center.
- Sprinkle oats and pecans over top of exposed apples.
- Put the tart in the oven and bake until crust is slightly browned and apples are tender – about 50 minutes to an hour.
- Dress it up as you like and enjoy!
